Freeze Dried Food

Astronauts need to eat. How though would food be stored for long periods of time in space. Freeze dried food was the answer. Freeze dried food was created for long term Apollo missions. First the food is cooked, quickly frozen, and then slowly heated in a vaccum chamber to remove ice crystals. The product still has 98% of the nutrients yet ways only 20% of its original weight. Commercialy freeze drying food is used for preservation and by outdoor enthusiasts.
